Autumn Term
This term we are going to be learning all about Castles!
We went on a school trip to Colchester castle where we found out all about the different features that castles have to help protect it, and different ways which enemies would try to attack the castle. We learnt about jobs within the castle and had a go at holding lots of artefacts. We even got to walk along the roof of the castle! It was so much fun!

In order to become a 'writer' we always have lots of experience days beforehand. In year 1 we always begin with a hands on 'experience' day and the next day we write about it. In the first few weeks, we have been busy building castles using different materials, which links in with our science topic. We have been using adjectives to describe the castles.
Here are some photos of us making the castles. Which one do you think was the strongest?

After building the castles, we had a go at using our steps to success to write some sentences. Can you remember what our steps to success are?
In maths we have been working really hard on writing our numbers correctly and looking at number bonds to 10. We made our own Numicon sandwiches to help us remember which 2 number add together make 10. Can you remember which ingredients we decided?
We have also been working on 1 more and 1 less, partitioning numbers and addition. We always make our maths lessons fun, practical and challenging.
Throughout the term we will also be covering subtraction, multiplication and division as well as 2d and 3d shape, statistics, time and measures.
Here are some fun maths games which you can enjoy at home.

Phonics
We have 2 phonics session each day. One in the morning and another in the afternoon. This is to help your children with their reading. In June, your child will complete a phonics screening test. Below are some past test papers and some phonics games you can do with your children at home to help them pass the phonics test.
Homework
Top Dog is awarded to the child we feel has put in the most effort into their homework. They will take home the 'Top Dog Teddy' for the week.
Here are some examples of some super homework. Please keep revisiting, as new homework will be added each week. |
WOW Moments
If your child has done something amazing at home, we would LOVE to hear about it! Please fill out a wow moment slip, which you can collect from the classroom, and your child can share this with the class before having their 'wow moment' displayed in the classroom. This can be anything from doing really well at a hobby, helping tidy their room or being kind to a sibling. We are looking forward to seeing your children working hard at home as well as school!

Spring Term
In Spring Term we are going to be learning about ....
Maths
Summer Term
We have another fun filled term this term learning all about the seaside! We are lucky enough to live close to the beach and this term we will be visiting the beach to help us with our learning.
In English we are learning skills to help us be a 'writer' and a 'reader'. We have been learning the story The Snail and the Whale, by Julia Donaldson, one of our classes favourite Authors. We have a lovely outside area which we use to learn outside of the classroom. We use this area to act out parts of the story and then the following day we write about it. We also role play parts of the story at out tables.
Here we are using a shell and playdough to create a snail, and we acted out the part of the story where the snails tries to leave the rock. We wrote down action words to say how the snail was moving and used adjectives to describe the snail.

We have been busy mathematicians in maths this term learning all about the 4 rules, addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. Here we are working really hard to partition numbers into tens and ones.
As well as English and Maths we have also been very busy learning in other areas too...
